Syntracts transforms dense legal contracts into usable data that can be searched, analyzed, and integrated across workflows.
Heading into their $5.3M Seed raise, CEO Doug Bemis and co-founder Chris Martin were preparing to introduce a technical approach that broke from the rest of the legal-AI market. With a dominant, well-funded player already shaping perceptions in the category, we knew many investors would wonder whether the world needed another legal-AI startup at all.
The challenge was making Syntracts’ differentiation clear from the very first slide, and showing why their machine-learning architecture solved problems the LLM-based tools couldn’t touch.
Defining what makes Syntracts different
To avoid being mistaken for yet another LLM-layered tool, we needed to surface Syntracts’ uniqueness immediately. Their system wasn’t prompt-driven; it was a real machine-learning architecture built from hundreds of fine-tuned models trained on synthetic data.
With time being of the essence, the work became a rapid, iterative sprint. We refined the narrative daily around live investor conversations, reshaping the opening sequence so Syntracts’ difference was unmistakable from the start.

Structuring a story that would compel investors
Together, we helped Syntracts:
- Front-load how they’re differentiated from incumbents
- Lead with technical simplicity - so generalist investors could grasp the nuances that explained why this product needed to be built

The result was a deck that felt inevitable: each claim grounded, each question answered before it was asked.

Reaching a pitchable state
The momentum built quickly and Syntracts closed a $5.3 million Seed round led by Hyperplane, with participation from Khosla Ventures, Harvest Capital, Fortitude Ventures and continued support from Point72 Ventures and Myriad Ventures.
Beyond the capital, Syntracts:
- Hit their target $22.8M valuation
- Turned early skepticism into active interest from top-tier investors who had previously moved-on from legal AI
- Extended the same story framework into go-to-market messaging and customer education
Turning skepticism into conviction
Doug summed up the impact:

By clearly articulating what made Syntracts different, and structuring the story to reward investor curiosity instead of competing for attention, the company went from being compared to Harvey to being recognized as its own category of innovation.
“If we waited until slide eight to explain what made us different, investors would’ve tuned out thinking they’d already heard this story before.”
Doug Bemis, CEO, SYNTRACTS
“Every time an investor asked something, it was on the next slide. The deck answered everything cleanly and gave me confidence when pitching.”
“The clearest impact was getting us to a pitchable state within the timeline we needed to close the round, and at a level of quality that would’ve taken far longer, and probably been two-thirds as good, if we’d done it ourselves.”
